Sao Miguel

The Green Island

1 Jan to 01 Jan
In the middle of the Atlantic stands a paradise full of green landscapes, lakes of a unique beauty and hidden treasures. It is the island of São Miguel, the largest of the Azores archipelago. Known as the Green Island, it is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the pinnacle of nature. An unmissable trip for the senses!

The arches of the City Gates welcome you to the capital, Ponta Delgada. Walk through the Historic Centre, which concentrates trade, markets and local delicacies shops - try the custard apple, the araçá jam, yams and sweet potatoes. Visit the beautiful churches, the Carlos Machado's Museum and the Fort of São Brás. Take a carriage ride (also take the opportunity to admire the several graffiti of national and international artists), watch a show at the Micaelense Coliseum and finally go to the Marina, modernized part of the city known as Portas do Mar, where you'll find many bars, restaurants and entertainment.

Then go on an adventure through the rest of the island! Get surprised by the wonderful Seven Cities Lagoon, a unique setting in the world. Go to the magnificent Lagoa do Fogo, and bathe in the waterfalls and hot water dams of the Caldeira Velha. The Furnas parish is also fantastic, with the Lagoa das Furnas and the various thermal waters, boilers and thermal pools, such as the Poça da Dona Beija and the Terra Nostra Park. Here you can taste the famous Cozido das Furnas, cooked under the ground with volcanic heat! Pay a visit to Gorreana, the oldest tea plantation in Europe, and to the pineapple plantations. If you love sports and adventure, then this is the right place: there are an infinite number of activities that you can practice, from paragliding to scuba diving, and do not forget: this is one of the world's best places to observe whales!
